Inversion of the eyelids

When the eyelids are inverted, the eyelashes and skin rub against the surface of the eye, causing irritation and discomfort.

Inversion of the eyelids may be permanent Sometimes, however, the condition develops when a person forcibly closes their eyes or squeezes their eyelids tightly together. Eyelid inversion occurs mainly in the elderly and usually involves the lower eyelid

Artificial tears and ointments usually relieve symptoms, but the patient may need surgery to correct the condition. Without medical intervention, eyelid inversion can cause corneal damage, eye infections, and vision loss.
There are several reasons for inverted eyelids:

  • muscle weakness As we age, the muscles and tendons under the eyes weaken As a result of this process, inversion of the eyelids may develop
  • Scars and surgical procedures in the past Scarring of the skin caused by burns, trauma, or surgery can alter the normal curve and direction of the eyelid, sometimes resulting in drooping of the eyelid.
  • Eye infection An eye infection - trachoma - causes inflammation of the inner part of the eyelid As a result of the infection, inversion of the eyelids and even blindness may develop if significant corneal complications develop.
  • Inflammation or infection Infection and inflammation of the eyelid can lead to a condition called spastic inversion of the eyelids.
  • Complication of development In rare cases, eyelid inversion is present at birth (congenital). Often, babies born with inverted eyelids are born with an extra fold in the skin of the eyelid called the epiblepharon.

Eyelid inversion symptoms are caused by the eyelashes and the outer part of the eyelid rubbing against the surface of the eye. Symptoms:

  • Feeling that there is something in the eye
  • Redness of the white of the eye
  • Eye irritation or pain
  • Sensitivity to wind and light
  • Excessive tearing
  • Mucous discharge and puffiness on the eyelid Without medical intervention, prolonged puckering of the eyelids may cause eye damage Be sure to use artificial tears and moisturizing ointments to protect your eyes until you see your doctor

If you know you have inverted eyelids, be alert for symptoms such as: corneal damage, ulceration, rapidly increasing redness, pain, sensitivity to light, or decreased vision If you notice any sight-threatening symptoms, consult an ophthalmologist
