Headaches caused by sex

Headaches caused by sex occur during sexual activity, especially during orgasm You may notice a dull ache in your head and neck Pain increases along with sexual arousal More often, the patient feels a sudden, severe headache right before or during orgasm.

Most cases of headaches caused by sex are not dangerous However, some of them may indicate a more serious disease, such as problems with the blood vessels that feed the brain.
Any sexual activity that leads to orgasm can trigger sex-related headaches.

Rapid-onset and slow-onset headaches may be primary headache disorders and not associated with any underlying cause. Sudden onset sex-related headaches are often associated with:

  • Thinning and bulging of the wall of an artery in the head (intracranial aneurysm)
  • Abnormal connection of arteries and veins in the brain (arteriovenous aneurysm) that causes blood to leak into the area around the brain.
There are two types of headaches caused by sex:

    • Dull pains in the head and neck that get worse as sexual arousal increases.
    • Sudden, severe, throbbing headache right before or during orgasm

In some people, both forms of headache are combined.

Most cases of headaches caused by sex last for several minutes Other cases may last for hours and sometimes 2-3 days

People with the disease may have pain in clusters for several months Sometimes the pain will go away on its own within a year or more Most patients experience pain for 6 months It is possible that a person has only one such pain in his life

    When to consult a doctor

The majority of headaches caused by sex do not require medical attention. However, in case of headache during sexual activity, especially if it is the first time, consult a doctor
