Geographical language
Geographic tongue is a harmless condition associated with the surface of the tongue The tongue is normally covered with small, pinkish-white bumps (papillae) that are actually short, hair-like growths. In the case of geographic tongue, some parts of the surface of the tongue lack papillae, which is why these areas look like red "islands" with smooth, slightly furrowed borders.
These places give the language a map-like, geographical look These lesions often disappear in one place and appear in another place on the tongue Geographic tongue is also called benign migratory glossitis
Although geographic tongue may seem alarming, it does not cause health problems and is not associated with infections or cancer. Geographic tongue can cause discomfort and increased sensitivity to a number of foods
The cause of geographic tongue is unknown and the condition cannot be prevented It is thought that there may be a link between geographic tongue and psoriasis (a chronic skin condition), but more research is needed to confirm this link.
Signs and symptoms of geographic tongue include:
- Smooth, red, irregularly shaped lesions on the back or side of the tongue
- Frequent changes in the location, size, and shape of the lesion
- Possible discomfort, pain, or burning sensation after eating hot, spicy, salty, or acidic foods
Many people do not experience geographic tongue symptoms
Geographical tongue can exist for months The problem often resolves itself, but it may reappear after some time
