Epididymitis
Epididymitis means inflammation of the duct (epididymis) in the back of the testicle The epididymis stores and transports sperm Men of any age can develop epididymitis
The most common cause of epididymitis is a bacterial infection, including sexually transmitted infections such as gonorrhea and chlamydia. Sometimes, inflammation of the testicles may be involved This condition is called epididymo-orchitis
Causes of epididymitis:
- Sexually transmitted infections Gonorrhea and chlamydia are the most common causes of epididymitis in young, sexually active men.
- Other infections In sexually inactive males, epididymitis can be caused by non-sexually transmitted bacteria. In men with urinary tract or prostate infections, the bacteria can spread to the epididymis
- Amiodarone Inflammation of the epididymis may be caused by heart medication
- Urine in the epididymis (chemical epididymitis) This condition occurs when urine flows backward into the epididymis This condition is mainly caused by heavy lifting and straining
- Traumatic injury Traumatic injury to the groin may cause epididymitis
- Tuberculosis Rarely, epididymitis develops as a result of tuberculosis infection
Symptoms of epididymitis:
- Swelling, redness or warmth in the scrotum area
- Testicular pain, usually on one side
- Painful urination or frequent urge to urinate
- Discharge from the penis
- Pain with ejaculation or intercourse Symptoms of chronic epididymitis develop gradually The causes of chronic epididymitis are sometimes unknown
