Congenital myopathies

Congenital myopathies are rare inherited muscle diseases caused by a genetic defect. There are many forms of congenital myopathy, but most share common features, such as poor muscle tone and weakness.

Symptoms of congenital myopathy include eating and breathing limitations, musculoskeletal problems such as curvature of the spine (scoliosis), brittle bones (osteopenia), or hip abnormalities. Symptoms of congenital myopathy may not appear until late childhood

Congenital myopathies cannot be cured Supportive treatments include physical, occupational, and speech therapies Feeding and breathing aids may be required

Genetic analysis may prove useful in determining the risk of congenital myopathies in subsequent pregnancies.
